SAN ANTONIO — If you had told the Hendrickson Hawks, prior to Friday, that they would score 56 points in their area round playoff game with Kerrville Tivy they would certainly have been making plans to play again this weekend. As it turned out, 56 points weren’t enough to get the Hawks (6-5) past the Antlers as they fell 63-56 at Heroes Stadium on Friday, concluding their season.
Damarion Jackson again had a huge game for the Hawks, rushing for 135 yards and three touchdowns. His only pass of the game also resulted in a score as he hooked up with Daje Johnson for the 39-yard score. Hendrickson led 28-14 after one quarter and 35-28 at halftime. They held a 56-49 advantage in the fourth quarter, but the Antlers tied the contest at 56 all when Chad Ham hauled in a 63-yard strike from Johnny Manziel for a score. With just over seven minutes left in the game and 16 total touchdowns already on the board, the game was still undecided.
The Hawks struggled to move the ball after the Tivy score. Jackson broke a 6-yard run to give them one first down, but the Tivy defense tightened and Hendrickson was faced with a fourth and eight from their own 34-yard line. The Hawks called a fake punt on fourth down with Jackson taking the ball. Tivy’s Ben Ledezma stopped him short of the first down marker, setting the Antlers up with good field position. However, Manziel fired four straight incomplete passes and quickly returned the ball to the Hawks.
On the second play of the ensuing drive Hendrickson’s Juan Asencio coughed up the ball and Tivy’s Spencer Thomas recovered at the Hawk 33-yard line. This time the turnover cost Hendrickson immediately. On first down the Antlers ran a reverse pass as Mikhail Ironside fired a pass to Manziel for a 39-yard score. With the extra point Tivy took their first lead of the game 63-56. The score also gave Manziel a hat trick of scoring on the game. He threw for four touchdowns, rushed for one and caught another.
Hendrickson took over with 3:28 on the game clock but still could not move the ball. On fourth and five Jackson fired just his second pass of the game and it fell incomplete. The turnover on downs effectively ended the game as Tivy was able to run out the clock and send the Hawks home.
Asencio, filling in for an injured Kenny Williams, enjoyed a big night for the Hawks. He rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown and returned a kickoff 89 yards for another score. Hendrickson’s offense barely missed a beat with Williams on the sideline, amassing 410 yards and six scores.
