On Tuesday night, the Connally Lady Cougars came away with a 56-45 victory over the Stony Point Lady Tigers. This was a game that saw the Lady Tigers control the game early before the Lady Cougars established command of the game on the defensive end of the court in the second quarter.
Behind the play of freshman Miranda Simpson, the Lady Tigers were able to take a 16-13 first-quarter lead. During the opening period Simpson scored eight points which included two three-point baskets.
In the second quarter, with Lady Tigers point guard Zeniah Morgan in foul trouble, the Lady Cougars were able to fight back with their aggressive pressure defense and behind the hot shooting of Kali Jerrell, who had 18 first half points. The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Tigers 25-8 in the quarter to take a 38-24 halftime lead.
At the start of the third quarter, the Lady Tigers quickly scored six unanswered points to cut the Lady Cougars lead to 38-30. However, once again Jerrell would answer the call with a deep three-pointer to make the score 41-30. The two teams would trade buckets for most of the rest of the period before the Lady Tigers Ashley James scored to make the score 46-38. However, the Lady Cougars quickly answered back when Jasmine Dukes converted a basket off her own missed shot to give the Cougars a 48-38 lead at the end of three quarters of play. The Lady Cougars were led in the quarter by the play of junior Alexus Hardin, who came off the bench to score five consecutive points during a crucial time in the period in which the Lady Tigers threaten to make a run.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers would make the score 48-40, when Cymone Jeffries gathered an offensive rebound and scored. However, that would be as close as they would get, as the Lady Cougars controlled the tempo the rest of the way and got five points from Jerrell down the stretch to pull away with a convincing non-district victory.
The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Jerrell with 22 points, while the Lady Tigers were led by Simpson with 14 points.
