The Pflugerville Panthers defeated the Lufkin Panthers 89-69 in the Round Rock Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament. After a slow start, the Panthers were able to use their superior quickness to pull away in what ended up being an easy victory.

Pflugerville was able to take an early lead behind the play of Demetrius Smith, as the Lamar University signee scored seven points in the early going to give Pflugerville a 14-8 lead. Lufkin would fight back to take a 22-19 lead, following a 3-pointer by Bryan Davis. Lufkin continued their hot shooting and held a 26-21 lead at the end of the quarter. Lufkin made their run behind the play of Bryan Davis and JaDarius Davis, as the duo combined for 18 first quarter points.

In the second quarter, behind an effective pressure defense, coupled with some hot shooting, Pflugerville quickly regained the lead from Lufkin. With Lufkin ahead 27-23, Deon Mitchell and Smith nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give Pflugerville a 29-27 lead. From there, Pflugerville started to pull away, as their pressure defense led to several steals that were converted into easy baskets. Lufkin tried to keep pace, and cut Pflugerville’s lead to 34-33 with a 3-pointer. But Pflugerville went on 17-4 run to take a 53-37 lead at halftime. During the run, Jarrell Turner accounted for seven points and Mitchell excited the crowd with a breakaway dunk.

In the third quarter Pflugerville widened the lead to 55-37 on a layup by Mitchell. Lufkin would quickly answer with a 3-pointer by JaDarius Davis. Following another Lufkin 3-pointer, Pflugerville would score six straight points that included a dunk by Smith to take a 65-46 lead. Pflugerville got eight points in the quarter from Joseph Omozee to build their lead to 73-51.

Pflugervillle took their biggest lead of the night at 84-58 in the fourth quarter following a fantastic spin move by Darrian Dempsey. Lufkin would score five straight points before Charles Ieans nailed a 3-pointer to make it 87-63. Pflugerville missed several layups down the stretch, but still came away with an easy victory over Lufkin.

Mitchell led Pflugerville in scoring by with 18 points and Turner had 17 points. Lufkin was led in scoring by Bryan Davis with 20 points, while JaDarius Davis added 15 points.
