The Killeen Lady Kangaroos, led by Jasmine Bauglis’ game-high 20 points, shocked the Hendrickson Lady Hawks last week when they handed Hendrickson a district opening 48-36 loss at home. The loss dropped Hendrickson’s season record to 18-5, while the Lady Roos picked up only their fourth win of the season.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to an early lead as they found themselves with a 10-4 advantage halfway through the first quarter. Unfortunately the Hawks shooting went cold during the final four minutes of the quarter as they could only muster up two points. The Lady Roos meanwhile rattled off nine points, seven of which came from Tameeka Randall, to take a 13-12 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
The Lady Roos extended their lead in the second quarter as they outscored Hendrickson 13-8. The Lady Hawks’ struggled at the line as they connected on only 2-of-7 attempts from the charity stripe which prevented them from cutting into Killeen’s lead. Hendrickson could never pull closer than six points and found themselves trailing 21-15 midway through the quarter, then 23-17 with two minutes remaining in the quarter and finally 26-20 going into the half.
In the third quarter, Killeen’s Jasmine Goodwine got the inside game going for the Lady Roos with her 5-point contribution, while Hendrickson’s Kathryn Tolbert responded with five points for the Lady Hawks. The effort wasn’t enough however for the Hawks as they were unable to overcome a 14-point quarter by Killeen.
By the end of the third quarter Killeen had pushed their lead to a 12-point advantage at 40-28 and given themselves the cushion needed to come away with the all-important district win.
Offensively, Hendrickson was led by Tolbert who finished the night with 18 points, two assists and two offensive rebounds. Defensively, the Hawks were led by Jordyn Johnson’s five defensive rebounds and Tolbert’s four blocks.
