kingVeteran trustee Paul J. King recently shared with fellow board members and District administrators he will not seek a fourth term. King has occupied Place 3 on the Board since 2001, and will complete his third term in May.

The terms of Vernagene Mott and Carol Fletcher, Place 4 and Place 5 respectively, also expire in May. Both incumbents plan to seek re-election.

This will mark the first election held for a position on the PISD Board of Trustees since 2006. For the last three years, each incumbent has run unopposed.

According to district officials, King cited an increased travel schedule at work and a desire to spend more time with his family as the reason for his decision.

“It’s time,” King said in a written statement. “It is certainly not an easy decision, because I take seriously the role we play as board members. We are responsible for our community’s most important resource – its kids – and I appreciate the trust that was placed in me for nine years.

“It has been a pleasure to work with so many talented and dedicated staff members through the years,” King continued. “I thank all of those who supported me, and I feel confident that I am leaving at a time when Pflugerville is in the capable hands of our remaining board members, and an outstanding group of campus and district leaders.”

King still expects to play a role in education by continuing to help his wife, Rita, who is a first grade teacher in Austin.

“I don’t have any doubt I will still help Rita grade papers every weekend,” King joked.

Applications for a place on Pflugerville ISD School Board election ballot may be filed at the PISD administration building, at 1401 W. Pecan St., Pflugerville, Feb. 8 through March 8, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Place 3, Place 4 and Place 5 are to expire in May 2010.

Elections of Trustees are held annually for three-year terms. The election will take place May 8.
