Hendrickson started off district play with a strong showing, shutting out Marble Falls 4-0 at home last week.
“We’re very young and coming together quickly with an aggressive style of play,” Hawks coach Bill Anderson said.
The Mustangs had the first shot on goal that was saved by Hawks goalie Blake Rogers early in the first half. The Hawks responded by taking control of the ball and making their way down the field with some timely passing that began to break the defense down. Ivan Aguilera fed a nice pass into Gabe Williams who ripped a shot that was deflected into the back of the goal. The Mustang goalie was caught off guard, diving in the other direction, as Hendrickson went up 1-0.
The Hawks kept the pressure up by attempting to convert a corner kick with a header that just missed. Keeping the pressure on the Mustangs the Hawks created a turnover leading to a Julio Espinosa rip that rang off the cross bar.
The Mustang keeper stayed busy late in the first half having to stop another scoring flurry and a shot by Michael Hicks. The Mustangs attempted to put the heat on the Hawks, letting loose a nice low shot which was saved by the diving Rogers.
The Hawk offense turned up the heat with a couple nice passes that penetrated deep into Mustang territory and allowed Hicks to bury the ball into the old onion bag with 8:39 left in the first half.
Mustang keeper Robert Vidal came up big as Julio Espinosa let loose a powerful blast that was on target for a goal with 1:10 left before half, keeping the Hawk lead at 2-0 at intermission.
The Hawks brought in keeper Casey Tilley for the second half. He was tested right off the bat and came up big as he dove to stop a low shot on goal. The Hawks responded by taking control of the ball and pressuring the Mustangs once again. In the 19th minute of the second half the Hawks forced another turnover which resulted in some timely passes and a goal by Espinosa who celebrated with his teammates moments later.
The Hawks kept a relentless pressure on and it paid off in yet another turnover a few minutes later. Chase Tabor fed a nice pass to Hicks who wasted no time in finding the back of the net, putting Hendrickson up 4-0.
The two sides would exchange possession of the ball for the remainder of the half. Tilley came up big on the one remaining shot that mattered, turning aside a blast from Ruben Contreras.
