The Hendrickson Hawks pulled a major upset in the District 25-4A race, defeating the Lake Travis Cavaliers 68-60 to pull into at least a tie for second place with the Killeen Kangaroos, depending on the outcome of their game with the Hutto Hippos.

After falling behind 7-1 early in the first quarter, the Hawks quickly cut the lead to 7-6 after a 3-pointer by Tony Thompson. The Cavaliers increased their lead to 12-7 before the Hawks ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 16-14 lead. A Russell Lovett 3-pointer to close the quarter capped the run.

In the second quarter, the Cavaliers quickly tied the game at 19-19. They outscored the Hawks 14-11 the rest of the quarter to end the half ahead 33-30. The Cavaliers got nine points in the quarter from Griffin Gilbert, brother University of Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who was in attendance.

The Hawks trailed for most of the third quarter, but managed to stay close behind the shooting of Thompson, who buried three 3-pointers during the quarter. Late in the quarter they tied the game at 50-50 on a basket by Jacob Christy off an assist from Thompson. The Hawks finally took the lead for good when Jalen Washington, who played an outstanding floor game from the point guard position, converted an old fashion three-point play to give the Hawks a 53-50.

In the fourth quarter, the Hawks took their biggest lead of the night 63-54 following to two free throws by Washington. Washington then closed out the game with a breakaway dunk.

Thompson led the Hawks in scoring with 20 points and Washington added 13 more.

The victory improved the Hawks to 17-13 overall and 5-2 in district play. The Cavaliers dropped to 24-4 overall and 6-1 in district.
