Any thought the Pflugerville Panthers may have had about repeating as district champions ended Friday night as they fell to Bowie 70-67 in overtime at Panther gym.

Realistically Pflugerville’s chances to win District 25-5A were very long. The Panthers entered the game with a 7-3 district mark. Bowie was 8-2 while Westlake led the pack with a 10-0 record. However, with four games left in the regular season Pflugerville still was mathematically alive. Now the Panthers must content themselves with what seems like a third-place finish as they head into the playoffs.

Pflugerville built a big lead in the game, taking a 19-11 advantage after one quarter and a 34-18 lead at halftime. However, the Bulldogs came roaring back and trimmed the lead to 47-36 entering the final quarter of play. Bowie went took their fist lead of the game at 62-61 with 20 seconds left in the contest. The Panthers tied the game at 62-62 on a Deon Mitchell free throw. Mitchell had a chance to win it as he drove the lane and put up a shot at the buzzer but the ball would not fall and the game went to overtime.

The overtime period was not a good one for Pflugerville. They did not get a field goal until the final buzzer sounded and scored just three points prior to that all on free throws. All eight of Bowie’s points came off of free throws but they were enough to get the Bulldogs the win.

Jerrell Turner led the Panthers with 18 points. Mitchell had 14 and Demetrius Smith added 11.
