Girls basketball – Hawks claim piece of district crown
Wednesday, February 10, 2010 |
The Hendrickson Lady Hawks wrapped up a share of the district title Tuesday night with a 60-45 victory over Marble Falls.
With the regular season behind them, the Lady Hawks can now turn their attention to the playoffs that get under way next week. Heading into Tuesday night’s games, Hendrickson was tied with Killeen for the district lead with both teams sporting 6-3 district marks. According to Hendrickson coach Tera Hollywood the Lady Hawks will participate in a coin flip to determine district standings and their first round opponent.
Early on both teams exhibited patience in running their offense and as a result the game remained relatively low scoring for the first three and a half minutes with Hendrickson up 11-6.
The Lady Hawks did manage to get some separation in the closing minutes of the quarter thanks to defensive pressure that forced Marble Falls turnovers. The turnovers led to transition points that allowed the Lady Hawks to push their lead to 20-10 by the end of the first quarter.
Hendrickson continued the defensive pressure in the second quarter and also began to gain an advantage on the defensive boards. The strong defense by the Lady Hawks allowed Hendrickson to stretch the lead to 30-18 with three minutes left before the half. Marble Falls closed out the second quarter by squeaking out a 4-2 scoring advantage to pull back to within 10 points.
Kathryn Tolbert’s 12 points led Hendrickson’s offensive attack in the first half and was the equalizer for Marble Falls’ Lindsay Ansley who put up 11 first half points.
Hendrickson came out firing on all cylinders after the break as they quickly extended their lead to 15 points. Jordyn Johnson was the catalyst for the offense as she rattled off eight points in leading Hendrickson to a 21-point third quarter outburst. Five minutes into the quarter Hendrickson was up 51-31 and in complete control of the contest.
In the end Marble Falls did not have an answer for the trio of Tolbert, Brittany Gray, and Johnson. While Ansley was the game’s leading scorer with 21 points, that was not enough to counter Hendrickson’s triple threat who finished the night with 43 points. Tolbert led Hendrickson with 17 points, followed by Gray and Johnson with 14 and 12 respectively.
