Athlete of the week – Johnson leads Hawks to promised land
Thursday, February 11, 2010 |
In her four years as a member of the Hendrickson High basketball team Jordyn Johnson has pretty much seen it all.
She has seen the Hawks struggle to win a game. She has seen them jump out to a successful start and then struggle in district. And finally, in this her last year on the team, she has seen them reach the playoffs for the first time in school history.
“It feels great,” Johnson said. “I’m very happy. Last year I set a goal for myself, I said I am going to get to the playoffs and we have.”
If you want to know how the Hawks finally got over that final hurdle, won 20-plus games and qualified for the postseason, you don’t have to look any further than the electric Johnson. The talented guard leads the team in points with 16 a game and steals with 3.4. She also averages over two assists and five rebounds per contest so her contributions are not limited to any one facet of the game.
“We’re doing really good,” Johnson said. “This is the best we’ve done out of my four years here. This is definitely our best year.”
As for the team’s newfound success, Johnson credits it all to better team chemistry.
“We’ve come together better than we have in the past,” she said. “We have stepped up when we’ve needed to.”
Johnson came into this year’s basketball season having already made the decision of where she would ply her trade in college. She chose Tarleton State in Stephenville for many reasons.
“It’s close to home,” she said. “It’s an easy distance to travel. I can drive home instead of fly. The campus is really nice and I love the school. The girls on the team were really nice. I loved it.”
Her success is not at all a surprise. Johnson comes from a family of basketball players. She says she first picked up the ball when she was seven and joined her first team when she was eight. From there she says she fell in love with the sport. As for her favorite aspect of the game, she says she enjoys her time on the court playing the most.
“I like the games,” she said. “I love competing and having fun.”
Johnson has already helped the Hawks make history this season. As the team heads into the postseason next week she hopes that each week brings a little more history for the Hendrickson High girls basketball program and ultimately concludes with a state title.
“We want to make it to state and win,” she said. “We want to go all the way.”
