Snow was in the air throughout Central Texas earlier this week, and so too were dates and times for local events and classes as inclement weather forced cancellations and delays.

In Pflugerville, the snowball effect started around 10 a.m. Tuesday with Pflugerville ISD announcing the cancellation of its Community Forum, which had been set for 7 p.m. that evening. PISD Superintendent Charles Dupre had been scheduled to discuss the state of the district, including new demographic projections and budget information.

At the time of Tuesday morning’s announcement, the school district noted all other events were set to take place as scheduled, and schools would dismiss at regular times.

That changed about two hours later. At 12:12 p.m., the district announced the postponement of all after-school activities and early dismissals for all PISD middle schools and high schools.

High schools dismissed at 12:30 p.m., middle schools dismissed at 1:30 p.m. but elementary schools were let out at their regular 2:50 p.m. time. Provan Opportunity Center middle and high school students were released at 12:30 p.m, while POC elementary students were let out at 1:30 p.m.

Central administration “non-essential” personnel were sent home at 3 p.m. The district said “key staff” would maintain district operations until all students were safely home.

PISD also rescheduled all UIL after-school events, including high school basketball playoffs, which were reset to take place 24 hours later.
Shortly before noon, city of Pflugerville officials announced the cancellation of the City Council’s regularly scheduled council meeting that evening due to inclement weather.

The city later announced city offices closed at 4 p.m., while the Pflugerville Recreation Center and the public library were expected to close at 5 p.m.
With that announcement, thoughts turned to the following day and whether events would begin as scheduled. The city, in the same announcement, noted city offices and the recreation center would open at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Residents were asked to visit the city’s Web site, cityofpflugerville.com, for more information on additional cancellations or snow alerts. The city’s Citizens Communication Hotline, 251-4004, was also noted available for customers needing assistance.

Pflugerville ISD officials were turning their attention to Wednesday’s classes. At nearly the same time as the city’s closure announcement, the district noted PISD schools would start two hours later than usual Wednesday.
Also, YMCA officials on Tuesday asked parents to pick their students up as early as possible from after-school care, for safety reasons.
