An Austin man accidentally shot and killed himself, police said, in the parking lot of shooting range in Pflugerville.

Police received a 911 call from a woman who told police she saw 63-year-old Chris Lewis Kimbell slumped over in his car outside of Red’s Indoor Gallery in Pflugerville.

“She tapped on the window to see if he was OK. When she did, she could see that he was bleeding and she called 911,” Pflugerville police assistant Chief Jim McLean said. “She happened to be an actual nurse and tried to assist but it was already pretty much too late.

Attempts to resuscitate Kimbell continued when police and EMS arrive, but he was late pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Kimbell was shooting his semiautomatic handgun at the range immediately prior to the incident.

Travis County Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy, though has not given any updates as to the cause of Kimbell’s death.

Representatives at the shooting range had no comment on the incident.

“From the things that we saw in [the car] there was no indication that there was an outside party involved in any form or fashion. We didn’t suspect any type of foul play from what we saw in the car,” McLean said.

Staff at the medical examiner’s office said there is no responsive information to release at this time about the cause of Kimbell’s death.

“The cause of death is determined in the autopsy report which is currently pending toxicology results and may take as long as eight weeks from the time of the autopsy (March 3) for completion.” TCME staff said in an e-mail.

“Please be aware that if we have been notified of a law enforcement objection to the release of information, our office may withhold information until the objection is withdrawn.”
