The Pflugerville Lady Panthers and the Connally Lady Cougars wrapped up district play on Friday night as they faced off in the season finale of girls varsity soccer. The Panthers, led by sophomore sensation Paige Piland‘s two-goal performance, shut out the Lady Cougars to finish district play with a 2-0 victory over their crosstown rival.

As it is with most soccer games, the low scoring contest was a back-and-forth affair during the first half of play as neither team was able to find the back of the net. While each team had their opportunities, it was the defensive units that stepped up to control the pace and flow of the game during the first 60 minutes of action.

The second half offered more from the offensive end as both teams seemed to find their rhythm. In Pflugerville’s case their offensive outburst came from the foot of Piland who put the team on her shoulders and carried them with a two-goal second half scoring performance.

The Lady Panthers first score came midway through the second half when Piland fired a shot past the Connally keeper on a penalty kick to give Pflugerville a 1-0 lead. That goal turned out to be the game winner, but the Lady Panthers did get an insurance score with time running down. Piland’s second goal, which came with just over a minute remaining in the contest, put the Lady Panthers up 2-0. The goal provided the Lady Panthers breathing room to cruise to the victory as the clock ticked down.

The Panthers finish the season 4-7-1 in district play. Connally wraps things up with a 1-11 mark.
