topstorytrackThe Connally and Pflugerville High track teams made the most of their final District 25-5A meet, dominating the event and bringing home both the boys and girls titles.

The Cougar boys won the event of the second year in a row, holding off the Pflugerville boys for the win. On the girls side it was the Pflugerville girls who were triumphant, defeating second-place Bowie. Connally finished fifth in the girls meet.

“It feels really good to complete our first goal which was to win the district championship,” Cougar coach Kevin Ellison said. “We did this with less varsity members than we have ever had. We missed out on some opportunities to advance another relay but we feel good about the overall results. My coaches did a really good job with our field events, that was the foundation of our success. This was a total team effort. I’m proud of all my kids that participated and represented Connally.”

Jacael Davis had a great meet for the Cougars, winning the high jump (6-feet 6-inches) and the triple jump (44-11). Davis followed this up by teaming with Brandon Pittman, Jacoby Sanders and Brian Washington to win the 400-meter relay (41.7 seconds). For good measure, Davis placed second in the 110 hurdles.

Aaron Bynum also got a win for Connally, taking the discus (154-0). Anthony Bryant, who in his spare time stars for the Cougars’ baseball team, won the 100 (10.7).

The Panthers got two wins from Michael Bowser who took the 110 hurdles (14.71) and the 300 hurdles (39.02). Drew Travis won the 400 (49.58). Kizito Njoku won the long jump (22-1.5) and the team of James Hilliard, Bowser, Jamal Lee and Travis took the 1600 relay (3:25.21)

Sanders took second in the triple jump (44-0) for the Cougars with Trey Rice finishing third (42-10). Ashton Deshay finished third in the shot put (49-0). Sanders placed second in the long jump (21-11). Jonathan Haywood finished third in the 300 hurdles with Dion Martin taking fourth.

The Panthers got a fifth from James Hilliard in the 400 (51.0). Nathan McCallum took sixth in the 800 (2:02.09). Yusef Khan was fifth in the 1600 (4:50.63) and second in the 3200 (10:08.91). Joseph Sanchez finished sixth in the 110 hurdles (16.50). Brandon Pacheco took fifth in the 300 hurdles (41.06). Tyrus Thompson was second in the shot put (52-10) and fourth in the discus (148-0). Savon Thomas finished fourth in the shot put (48-5). Desmond Smith, Njoku, Travis and Lee placed third in 400 relay (42.69). Njoku, Storm Woods, Sammy Flowers and Lee were third in the 800 relay (1:30.87).

The Panther girls had an outstanding showing, picking up five wins. Kaylah Burton won the 100 (12.65), Lashawnda Simmons the 200 (25.39) and Christie Mooney the 400 (59.25). Burton, Simmons, Taylor Cobbs and Danielle Aiken won the 400 relay (49.45) and Burton, Simmons, Mooney and Aiken won the 800 relay (1:44.90).

Connally’s lone wins came from reigning district champion Brittany Roberts who won the shot put (39-8) and the discus (115-1).

Aiken took second in the 100 (12.84) for the Panthers. Carly Gibson was sixth in the 3200 (12:24.70). I’Tiana Taylor finished fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.82) and third in the 300 hurdles (47.71). Monia Clark took fourth in the 300 hurdles (48.60). Jessica Gibson, Clark, Diana Omozee and Mooney were third in the 1600 relay (4:11.52). Burton took second in the long jump (16-10). Mooney was fifth in the long jump (16-0.5) and fourth in the triple jump (34-9.5). Simone Sawyer took third in the shot put (34-10.5) while C’Quashae Williams was sixth (31-3.5). Linda Tappa placed second in the discus (101-8) with Melissa Salinas third (96-6.5). Clark finished third in the high jump (5-0) with Omozee sixth (4-10). Sierra Martin took third in the pole vault (8-6) with Alyssa Murphy finishing fourth (7-6).

Connally’s Tierra McCaster, Simi Aliu, Lauren Pittman and Cindy Okpegbue took second in the 1600 relay (4:10.82). Okpegbue was fourth in the long jump (16-7.5) while Megan Matthews took sixth (15-11). Kali Jerrell finished sixth in the 100 (13.50). Pittman was sixth in the 200 (27.75). Okpegbue placed fourth in the 400 (1:00.44). Matthews finished third in the 100 hurdles (15.75) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (49.33). Bianca Williams, Aliu, Pittman and Okpegbue finished third in the 800 relay (1:48.39).

The top three finishers in each event qualified for the region meet which will be held in San Antonio on May 3.

The Panthers dominated the junior varsity division, winning both the boys and girls titles. The Connally boys took second while the Cougar girls finished eighth.

Pflugerville’s boys got wins from Luis Serrato in the 1600 and Ray Motiel in the 3200 while the team of Bryan Iloka, Quinton Simmons, Trenton Coleman and Derius Yarbrough won the 400 relay. Iloka, Coleman, Rashard Montgomery and Yarbrough won the 800 relay as well. Jeff Jones won the discus and Coleman took the triple jump.

Nathaniel Richardson won the 100 for the Cougars. Zach Freeland took the shot put.

The Panther girls were led by Taliyah Brooks who won the 100 and 300 hurdles, the long jump and the high jump. Jasmine Brooks who won the 100 and 400. Amber Parma, Vera-Mae Walker, Jasmine Henderson and Curteisha Woods won the 400 relay while Parma, Taliyah Brooks, Walker and Jasmine Brooks won the 800 relay. Sylvia Omozee won the discus, Samantha Parks the pole vault and Kendra Williams the shot put.

Connally’s best finish came from Caren Brown who took fourth in the 100 and 200.

In the freshman boys division, Connally placed second and Pflugerville was third.

Adrian Williams won the 800 for the Cougars while Dejon Williams took the long jump. Devon Martin took first in the high jump. Pflugerville got a win from Stephen Brown in the 200. The team of Mario Balderas, Robert Easley, Brown and Jay Byrd won the 400 relay.
