The Hendrickson High boys track team defended their District 24-5A title with a narrow victory in Marble Falls last week. The Hawks finished the meet with 164 points, while Hutto took second with 152. The Hendrickson girls team finished third overall.
The Hawk boys took the win thanks in large part to five first-place finishes. Hector Flores won the 3200 (10:11.50). Daje Johnson, Tommie Robins, Kenneth Williams and Kyndall Clanton won the 400 relay (43.06) and the 800 relay (1:30.74). Joshua McKinney took first in the 400 (49.73). Derwood Kirby won the 200 (22.76) and Deionta James, Kirby, McKinney and Jeramy Triplett won the 1600 relay (3:27.99).
Hendrickson’s boys squad had plenty of other good showings. Triplett was third in the 3200 (10:15.10). McKinney was second in the 800 (2:03.08). Johnson was second in the 100 (11.22) with Clanton third (11.24) and Robins sixth (11.37). Kirby finished second in the 400 (50.43). Herbert Butcher placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (41.89). Kirby was second in the 200 (23.12), Stephan Hairston took sixth (23.73). Triplett finished second in the 1600 (4:38.78), Flores was fourth (4:42.46). Terrence Simmons took fourth in the discus (136-02). Addison Willis was fourth in the high jump (5-8). McKinney finished second in the long jump (21-02.25) while Clanton was third (20-07.25).
As they have done in the past the Hendrickson girls had a strong showing from their relay teams. The quartet of Karissa Gravesmill, Shavonna Tavarez, Kiana Burgess and Brittany Gaines won the 400-meter relay (49.61) while Gravesmill, Erica Greene, Burgess and Tavarez took the 800 relay as well (1:46.01). Kayla Brown, Tasha Mayne, Tavarez and Cameo Buckner placed second in the 1600 relay (4:09.24).
Individually the Hawks got a win from Kiana Burgess in the 200 (27.17) and Kaniesha Jones in the high jump (5-feet-2-inches).
Mayne placed second in the 800 (2:25.67) while Sade Triplett was fourth in the 3200 (12:45.94). Breocia Russell took fifth in the 100 hurdles (17.42). Gravesmill was second in the 100 (13.14) and Jennifer Mbanasor took third (13.17). Kayla Brown placed second in the 400 (60.74). Greene was third in the 300 hurdles (50.19) and Russell was fifth (51.12). Mbanasor placed fifth in the 200 (27.90). Triplett was third in the 1600 (5:40.46) with Tyane Ramos finishing sixth (5:56.07). Glad Nwaozo placed third in the high jump (5-0). Burgess was sixth in the long jump (14-10.25). Mayne finished sixth in the pole vault (7-6). Tavarez was third in the triple jump (34-4).
The top three finishers in each event qualified to compete at the 4A region meet May 3 at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
In the junior varsity division both the Hawk boys and girls placed fourth.
The girls top finish came from their 1600-relay team. Mariah Millsap, Ambrie Sorells, Kiara Sowell and Brittany Hidrogo teamed to take second in 4:29.44. The junior varsity boys got a win from their 400-relay team. Javante Taylor, Jalen Elmore, Damarion Jackson and Blyane Hernandez finished in 44.37. Taylor also won the high jump (5-08).
