The Hendrickson High boys track team took first place at the Region IV 4A track meet in San Antonio on Tuesday with 55 points. Boerne Champion finished second with 44. In the 5A meet the Connally High boys finished second with 40 points to San Antonio Wagner’s 59.
Leading the way for the Hawks were their relay teams. Hendrickson won the 1600-meter relay (3 minutes, 21.85 seconds) and the 400 relay (42.65). Joshua McKinney took second in the 400 (49.57) to aid the Hawk cause. Both teams as well as McKinney qualified for state with their finishes. The Hawks also got a seventh place finish from Jeramy Triplett in the 3200 (10:13.39).
The Cougars were led by their 400 relay team and Anthony Bryant both of whom finished second. Bryant, who recently announced he would attend USC to play baseball, placed second in the 100 (11.10). Brian Washington took second in the 200 (22.25) and will advance to state as well. The Cougars got an eighth place finish from Aaron Bynum in the discus (147-feet, 7-inches). Jacoby Sanders was fourth in the long jump (21-09.75) and Jacael Davis finished third in the triple jump (45-01.5).
The Hendrickson High girls had two athletes qualify for state. Shavona Tavarez placed second in the triple jump (36-02.25) and Tasha Mayne was second in the 800 (time not available).
The Connally girls will send Brittany Roberts who booked a return trip to state by winning the shot put (42-07.50). Megan Matthews placed sixth in the 100 hurdles (15.64).
Pflugerville High had just one person qualify for state. LaShawnda Simmons finished second in the 200 (25.71) and advnaces. The Panthers’ Monia Clark finished sixth in the high jump (5-02). Kaylah Burton was fifth in the long jump (17-09.5). Tyrus Thompson took third in the shot put (55-06.25).
The state track meet will take place May 14-15 at Mike A. Meyers Stadium at the University of Texas.
