SAN ANTONIO – Erratic defense and pitching doomed the Hendrickson Hawks in the first game of their best of three series with Corpus Christi Calallen as they fell 8-0 at Blossom Athletic Complex on Friday night.

Three Hawk pitchers combined to give up seven hits, six walks and hit two Wildcat batters in the game. Hendrickson ace Trevor Seidenberger took the loss. He went five and one-third innings, surrendering five earned runs and striking out eight.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Calallen tacked a three-spot onto the scoreboard. Seidenberger retired the first hitter he faced in the inning, walked the next batter then induced a ground ball to shortstop that looked like a sure double play. Hendrickson’s Nate Turner fielded the ball cleanly but had trouble getting it out of his glove resulting in a force at second that kept the inning alive for Calallen. Two hits and one walk later the Wildcats held a lead they did not give back.

Calallen starter Rob Zastryzny was terrific. He gave up three hits and struck out eight.

Hendrickson’s offense only got a runner to third base once in the game. Cody Lunsford had a one-out double in the fourth and moved up when Turner grounded out to second. He could not score, however, as Tyler Havins grounded out to second to end the inning. The only other real Hawk threat came in the top of the sixth. With one out Turner walked and Havins singled, putting runners at first and second. Zastryzny quickly halted the rally, striking out Tyler Baker and getting Patrick Burris to pop out to second base to end the inning.

The Wildcats scored one run in the fifth and four more in the bottom of the sixth.

The series will resume at 1 p.m. Saturday in San Antonio. Will Birge is expected to be on the hill for the Hawks.

This Hutto fan needs to be schooled in having some class. He sounds like a poor sport ! In San Antonio this weekend, instead of “Remember the Alamo!” It should have been “Remember Hutto!” lol
