topstoryhoopersThe second summer of the Little Hoopers basketball clinic at the Plflugerville Recreation Center started Saturday with 18 players getting the chance to learn about the game from Connally High basketball coach Marshall Sanders, his players and staff.

“The clinic went really well,” Sanders said. “The kids really listened and tried hard in every drill. I had a really good time working with them. It was a lot of fun.”

The players who attended Saturday’s clinic got a lesson in basic basketball fundamentals and were given the chance to compete in drills and games designed to increase their basketball skill level and promote physical fitness.

“In each camp we do drills that cover ball handling, passing and shooting,” Sanders said. “We also teach the basic fundamentals of defense – stance, posture and sliding your feet. We incorporate fun activites that reinforce all of these basic basketball skills. We also teach listening and being coachable as life skills that transcend the game.”

Sanders said quite a few of those in attendance had participated last year and he was expecting that number to climb as the summer schedule progresses. However, anyone entering grades 1-6 is welcome at the camp which costs $8 per session. The next session is Saturday. Other clinics take place on July 10 and 17 and August 7 and 14.

“Send your kid to my camp because they are going to have fun, get some physical fitness activity and learn some basketball fundamentals,” Sanders said. “Teaching the game of basketball in camps and clinics is really important to me. When I was a youngster, my family could not afford to send me to camp so I make sure that my camps are fun, informative and memorable for the kids that attend.”
