Pflugerville High senior Alex Matlock recently announced he intends to play his college football at the University of Kansas.

Matlock, a defensive back for the Panthers, had been linked to many schools including Texas A&M but decided to go out of state to continue his football career.

“I thought it was the best college fit for me,” he said. “It gives you a private school feel but on a larger scale. The coaches were great people. It should be a great transition.”

Matlock, who had 73 tackles, four forced fumbles and seven pass breakups as a junior, said he is confident he’ll have the chance to contribute immediately for the Jayhawks.

“The coaches said the best players will play,” he added. “I’ll try to compete and show them I can play at a top level.”

Getting a decision made about where to go to college as soon as possible was a key for Matlock.

“It was definitely something I made a point of doing,” he said. “I wanted to get it done early. It’s the best thing for me. Now I can concentrate on my senior year and pursue a championship with my teammates.”

As his senior, and final, year at Pflugerville approaches this talented Panther hopes to help Pflugerville’s football team do something they almost did when he was a freshman, win a state title.

“I feel like we have a lot of senior leadership on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We have a lot of explosiveness in our backfield and our defense has a lot of veteran leadership. We should do well.”
