After falling to Westlake in the season opener Monday, the Pflugerville Panthers bounced back Tuesday night to even their record at 1-1 with a sweep of the Hendrickson Hawks (0-1). The Panthers controlled many aspects of the match as they rolled to a 25-16, 25-14, 25-15 victory.
In the first game the Panthers jumped out an early lead. Two net violations by the Hawks allowed the Panthers to take a 2-0 lead before Hendrickson settled down and ran off five unanswered points. The pressure put on by the Hendrickson offense during that run led to bad decisions and unforced errors by the Panthers. Finding themselves down 5-2, the Panthers regained their composure and fought their way back to a 6-6 tie thanks in part to some strong serving.
As Pflugerville Coach Jeff Coward pointed out after the match, “tonight we put our serves in, we passed better, and it allowed our block and offense to do what it is capable of doing, which is a lot.”
Pflugerville regained the lead at 8-7 and never looked back. They held as much as a 10-point lead during the game before finally ending with an eight point victory.
In the second game the Panthers lead from start to finish as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then cruised to the 25-14 win. Hendrickson struggled thoughout the second game and they could not fight back from the early deficit. As tough as the game was for the Hawks, the play of Brittany Gray certainly stood out. Gray did all she could especially with her serves which included an ace that pulled the Hawks to within six points early in the game.
In the third and final game the Hawks managed to keep the game close before Pflugerville pulled away. Hendrickson took the early lead and kept the game close before Pflugerville took the lead at 3-2, eventually winning 25-15.
