AUSTIN — The Hendrickson High volleyball team took one on the chin Tuesday night, falling in three games to Westwood 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17.
Led by Mattison Raiford (nine kills) and Keeley Davis (eight kills) the Warriors dominated the match going on several long runs to take the victory. Maddy Mendicino keyed the Westwood offense with 21 assists. Brittany Gray led the Hawks with seven kills. Casey Friesen had 13 assists.
Hendrickson was able to make things interesting in all three games, if only for a short while. The two teams traded points to start the first game before back-to-back kills by Raiford sparked a 4-0 Warrior surge. Emily Leggett added an ace and Mendicino scored a kill to put Westwood up 13-6. The Hawks fought back, however, A kill by Nicole Thomas started a 7-3 Hendrickson run that slashed the Warrior lead to 16-13. Blaine Koester, Friesen, Zoey Hanrahan and Gray all contributed kills to the run which finally ended when Westwood’s Maggie Pratt passed to Ellen Stuart who blasted home a kill to push the Warrior lead to 17-13. The point seemed to be the Hawks’ undoing as Westwood closed out the first game with an 8-1 run. Nikki Welch served three aces for the Warriors who also took advantage of four Hawk errors as they took the win.
Stuart scored on two kills and a stuff block to help the Warriors jump out to a 7-4 lead in the second game. Gray hammered a kill to briefly stop the Westwood run that started again with a kill and an ace from Pratt. The Warriors game then turned sloppy as three errors helped Hendrickson pull to within one point at 9-8. But a bad Hawk serve returned momentum to Westwood and the Warriors responded with a 9-0 run that culminated in a Davis’ kill that put them up 18-8. Gray assisted on a kill for Lauren Muska to briefly halt Westwood’s charge. But the damage was done. The two teams traded points the rest of the way before a bad Hawk serve handed the Warriors the win.
Hendrickson took advantage of two Westwood errors and a Gray kill to jump out to a 4-3 lead in the night’s final game. Westwood rallied thanks to two Taryn Huber aces and a kill from Davis to take an 8-4 lead. Hendrickson’s Hanrahan scored on a stuff block and Maranda Vasquez served an acre to help the Hawks tie the game at 8-8 and kills by Gray and Thomas plus a Warrior error gave Hendrickson an 11-10 lead. Davis knocked down a kill to stop the Hawk run and Courtney Hall scored on a stuff block to help Westwood make an 8-1 run and build an 18-12 lead. Hendrickson gamely battled back as Thomas drove home a kill and the Hawks took advantage of some Warrior errors to pull within four at 20-16. Any hopes Hendrickson may have had of a comeback were quickly dashed by back-to-back kills by Davis that set Westwood up to wrap up the game and the match.
