AUSTIN — Despite a penalty-filled performance, the Hendrickson Hawks managed to get their first victory of the season by defeating the Leander Rouse Raiders 34-21.
The Hawks controlled most of the game but had three touchdowns called back because of penalties. However, strong performances by Kenny Williams and Damarion Jackson allowed the Hawks to get the win.
On the opening possession, the Raiders quickly moved down the field behind the play of their quarterback Tai Gadison. Gadison opened the game with a 16-yard run and then completed four passes to move the ball to the Hawks 2-yard line where Logan Kinder scored to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead.
At the 9:15 mark in the first quarter, the Hawks took possession at the 36-yard line. On the Hawks’ first play from scrimmage Williams raced 64 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
Following a three and out, the Raiders were forced to punt the ball to the Hawks’ Tommie Robins, who returned it 87 yards for a touchdown. However, the play was called back because of a penalty.
The Raiders fumbled away their next possession, as the Hawks’ Jollie Williams recovered the ball on the Raiders 41-yard-line. On the next play from scrimmage Williams raced 41-yards to give the Hawks a 14-7 lead with 3:15 left in the first quarter.
Later in the quarter, Hawk quarterback Damarion Jackson connected with Will Ward on 48-yard pass and run, which moved to ball to the Raider 42 yard-line. From there, Jackson raced 42 yards for a touchdown to increase the Hawks lead to 20-7, as the extra point attempt failed.
In the second quarter, the Hawks’ Jordan Townes intercepted a Gadison pass and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown giving the Hawks a 27-7 lead. Townes intercepted Gadison again on the Raiders’ next possession and return it deep into Raiders territory. The Hawks were unable to move the ball any farther, and a field goal attempt sailed wide left.
The Raiders moved the ball down to the Hawks’ 18-yard line just before halftime but a fumble ended their drive. The score at halftime was 27-7 with the Hawks still ahead.
In the third quarter, the Raiders continued to fight. Following an interception by Lucky Torres at the Hawks 49-yard line, the Raiders marched down field, as Gadison connected on passes to Kinder and Michael Botello, giving them a first down at the 24-yard line. However, the Hawks defense led by the charge of Townes, Jalen Howard and Devante Robinson proved impenetrable, forcing the Raiders to turn the ball over on downs at the 23-yard line.
Following a holding penalty that wiped out a 77-yard touchdown run by Williams, Jackson found Deionta James on a 28-yard pass play, giving the Hawks a first down at the Raiders 47-yard line. The Hawks moved the ball to the Raiders 35-yard line before a fumble terminated the drive.
The Raiders then went on 65-yard scoring drive, which was capped off with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Gadison to Wesley Lewis to cut the Hawks lead to 27-14.
In the fourth quarter, following onside kick recovery at the 44-yard, the Hawks went on a 56-yard scoring drive that ended with 14-yard touchdown run by Williams to boost the Hawks lead to 34-14.
The Raiders got the final score of the night, as Botello scored on a 4-yard touchdown run.
The victory improved the Hawks to 1-2, while the Raiders dropped to 0-3. Williams finished the night with 176 yards rushing, while Jackson contributed 106 passing yards and 50 yards rushing.
