Following Team World’s 35-29 win over Team USA in the International Bowl at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex on Wednesday night, the local participants felt good about the experience despite the loss.

The game served as a measuring stick with some of the countries best players and coaches.

“It’s definitely a confidence booster because all of my teammates are D-1 athletes,” Cedar Park senior Zach Espinosa said. “It’s good to measure my skills against all the guys.”

Despite storming back with two fourth quarter touchdowns, Team USA was unable to recover an onside kick with under a minute remaining in the game. The World took advantage of three Team USA turnovers. The 3,285 in attendance saw Team World win for the first time in the third edition of the annual game.

Hendrickson’s Daje Johnson playing as a slot receiver – something the University of Texas hopes to employ with him after grabbing him late from TCU – was part of an offense that couldn’t get anything going consistently on its side of the ball. He caught one pass for three yards and blocked a field-goal attempt in the third quarter.

“You’ve got so many playmakers that it makes it hard to play as a team,” Johnson said. “It’s definitely harder on the offensive side.”

Johnson felt relieved following the frantic couple of weeks he had as the recruiting season wound down.

“I’m very excited for my next four years. This game is great but I’m ready for college football. I’m hitting the weight room and running every single day. I feel at ease, I got it over with and I’m ready to be a Longhorn. I’m glad I got it off my chest,” he said.

Both Espinosa and Johnson played and connected with future teammates, with each thinking that it serves them well when they head to their respective schools.

Following the game, Stony Point coach Craig Chessher was found giving pleasantries to his defensive linemen that he coached in the game.

Chessher was disappointed in the outcome, despite the effort. He noticed last season’s game was more competitive and Team World had a lot to play for in terms of bragging rights.

“It was inevitable (that we lose our first game to the World),” he said. “It was just unfortunate that it had to happen here at my home. Our kids played very hard.”

Chessher came away from the game’s experience wanting to get right back to work with his team at Stony Point.

“What I learned about our staff is that we do things the right way at Stony Point. I’ve got a bunch of good soldiers that do what we ask them to do,” he said.

It was kind of a down year for the teams on which PISD products play college football. Kansas, Oregon State, Texas Tech and Arizona all suffered through losing seasons, that ended before December started. In spite of this, there are a handful of former PISD athletes taking part in this year’s bowl season. In fact there are four of them, all Pflugerville High graduates who will be playing in various bowls across the country. Here’s a look at who you can see on TV in the coming weeks.

Poinsettia Bowl

TCU (10-2) vs. Louisiana Tech (8-4)

Who: LA Tech’s IK Enemkpali

Where: San Diego

Date: Dec. 21

Time/TV: 7 p.m./ESPN

Outlook: Enemkpali, a red-shirt sophomore defensive lineman, played in 11 of the Bulldogs’ 12 games this season, finishing with 31 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He also forced a fumble. He earned WAC defensive player of the week honors in November after tallying six tackles (including a sack) against Mississippi. The Bulldogs will need a similar performance from Enemkpali if they are going to get past a TCU team that has scored over 30 points in 11 of their 12 games and broken the 40-point barrier four times.

Independence Bowl

Missouri (7-5) vs. North Carolina (7-5)

Who: Missouri’s Zaviar Gooden

Where: Shreveport, La.

Date: Dec. 26

Time/TV: 4 p.m./ESPN

Outlook: Gooden, a linebacker, has had a strong junior campaign for the Tigers. He is tied for second on the team in tackles with 74. He also has one sack, four pass breakups and a blocked kick. He was on the Nagurski award watch list early in the year but did not make the final five. He should have plenty of chances to shine in front of a national audience as the Tigers tangle with a Tar Heel team that has lost two of its last three games.

Holiday Bowl

California (7-5) vs. Texas (7-5)

Who: Texas’ Alex Okafor

Where: San Diego

Date: Dec. 28

Time/TV: 7 p.m./ESPN

Outlook: Okafor, a junior defensive end, has had a fine season with 54 tackles and seven sacks, earning the American Football Coaches Association’s All-American honors in the process. He has been a bright spot in an up-and-down year for the Longhorns who will try and finish the season on a high note against the Golden Bears. Cal has won four their last six games after suffering a three-game losing streak earlier in the season.

Insight Bowl

Iowa (7-5) vs. Oklahoma (9-3)

Who: Oklahoma’s Tyrus Thompson

Where: Tempe, Ariz.

Date: Dec. 30

Time/TV: 9 p.m./ESPN

Outlook: Thompson, a red-shirt freshman offensive lineman, has not seen a lot of time this season. He is listed as the backup left tackle on the Sooner depth chart and more playing time seems to be in the future for the former Panther. Still, he might get some time as the Sooners tangle with an Iowa team that has lost three of their last five games.

WALLER – They say mistakes will kill you. Then again, so will a D-I running back.

Unfortunately for the Pflugerville High football team they had to deal with both in their area-round playoff game with Spring Dekaney and the end result was what you might expect, the Wildcats knocked the Panthers from the playoffs 48-10 at Waller High on Saturday.

Tre Williams had a huge game for Dekaney, rushing for 263 yards and four touchdowns before leaving the game midway through the third quarter. Compounding the Panthers’ problems were three turnovers that all led to Wildcat scores.

Pflugerville (5-7) actually had the early lead in the game, taking the opening kickoff and marching 80 yards before Deconte Broussard sped 34 yards into the end zone to score. With the addition of Josh Ianno’s extra point the Panthers were up 7-0.

Then the Williams show began. The Texas A&M commit scored just about two minutes after the Panther touchdown, then added another score three minutes later to put Dekaney up 14-7. He added one more score in the second quarter as the Wildcats’ lead grew to 27-7. Ianno closed out the first half with a field goal for Pflugerville and it was the last points the Panthers would get on the season.

Williams’ assault on the Pflugerville defense continued into the third quarter when he scored his fourth touchdown before exiting for good a few minutes later.

WACO – The Hendrickson High football team put 42 points on the board, but their defense had no answer for Tyler John Tyler’s offense as the Hawks fell from the playoffs 56-42 in the area round at Midway High on Friday.

Daje Johnson led Hendrickson storming out of the gates, scoring on runs of 13 and 2 yards to stake the Hawks to a 21-14 advantage midway through the second quarter. However, the Lions high-powered offense kicked into gear at that point and did not stop scoring. John Tyler quarterback Greg Ward fired a 74-yard bomb to DeQuante Woods for a touchdown late in the second quarter sending the game in at halftime tied.

Ward took that momentum and broke loose in the third quarter, firing a 78-yard bomb to Woods and a 90-yard pass to Fred Ross to give the Lions a 35-21 lead they would not lose. Johnson, who finished the game with 128 yards rushing and four scores briefly stopped the John Tyler advance with a 3-yard score late in the third. The Lions, however, responded with another big play, this time a 72-yard run by Devonte Haggerty just 33 seconds after Johnson’s touchdown.

The two teams traded touchdowns throughout the fourth quarter and the Hawks could never get closer than seven-points again.

Ward finished the game with 494 yards passing and five touchdowns. He also ran for a score. Hendrickson quarterback Brice Helton also had a big game, passing for 211 yards and rushing for another 134.

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

DEL VALLE – The Pflugerville Panthers are undefeated when it matters the most.

Blain Kruemcke passed for two touchdowns and the Pflugerville defense allowed only a second quarter touchdown in a 28-7 victory over Del Valle. The victory in the bi-district round of the Class 5A, Division II playoffs improves Pflugerville’s record to 5-6.

“We believe in ourselves,” Kruemcke said. “We believe we can beat any team in the state so we’ll see.”

Pflugerville entered Friday night as one of six Central Texas teams that finished the regular season with both a losing record and a postseason berth. At 2-8, Del Valle was one of the others. Friday’s game was one of only four bi-district playoff games in the state that features two teams with losing records. Kirbyville and Rusk, two teams with identical 3-7 records, will play tonight in a Class 3A, Division II playoff game while Friday’s Class A bi-district schedule featured games between La Villa (4-6) and Yorktown (4-5) and Seagraves (3-6) and Bovina (3-7).

As soon as Pflugerville kicked off on Friday, however, those regular season records were irrelevant. Del Valle got into Pflugerville territory on each of its seven possessions in the first half but the Cardinals were limited to just a short Xxavier Holman touchdown run in the second quarter. Holman’s three-yard run through the Pflugerville defensive line gave Del Valle a short-lived 7-0 lead with 8:57 left in the second quarter.

Pflugerville responded to the Del Valle touchdown with a six-play scoring drive of its own. Then, on its next possession, the Panthers took a 14-7 lead with 31 seconds left in the first half. Pflugerville’s well-established running game did its work on the two scoring possessions as junior running back Adrian Dilworth scored the team’s first touchdown and then picked up a first down on the team’s next drive on a 4th-and-1 conversion attempt from the Del Valle 9. But it was the team’s passing game that sent the Panthers into halftime with a lead.

Pflugerville’s first play after Holman’s touchdown run was Kruemcke’s 40-yard pass to Elvin Iloka that took Pflugerville from its 37 to the Del Valle 23. On its second scoring drive, Pflugerville drew a pass interference penalty and Iloka later caught a seven-yard touchdown toss from Kruemcke.

“We’ve got a lot of talent, we’ve got a lot of speed,” Kruemcke said of Pflugerville’s passing game. “We’re going to use that as much as we can, we’ve got a lot of potential through the air.”

Pflugerville wasted no time adding to its score in the second half as sophomore Clarence Guidry returned the third quarter’s opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. Later in the quarter, Kruemcke threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Davonte Broussard and Pflugerville exited the frame with a 28-7 lead.

“We told them at halftime that we were down by seven (points) and that we had to play like we’re down by seven,” Pflugerville coach George Herrmann said. “We haven’t come out very well in the second half of most games this year so we really wanted to be fighting coming out and we did a tremendous job in the second half.”

In addition to Kruemcke’s two touchdown passes and 123 passing yards, Pflugerville got 75 rushing yards from Dilworth. After allowing Del Valle to reach the Pflugerville 11 on the Cardinals’ first possession of the third quarter, Pflugerville kept Del Valle on its side of the football field for the remainder of the game.

Pflugerville will play Spring Dekaney Saturday in Waller. Kickoff is 2 p.m.

The Hawks’ twin tailbacks, Daje Johnson and Samaje Perine had another outstanding game teaming up to rush for 352 yards and score four touchdowns. However, it was a fumble by each of them that helped West Mesquite get back in the game. The Wranglers turned a 14-0 deficit into a 14-14 tie before Perine returned a kickoff late in the second quarter 100 yards for a touchdown.

The score gave the Hawks (9-2) a lead they would not lose. Will Ward booted two field goals in the second half and Perine added one more score to the Hendrickson tally. The Wranglers had a chance to make the game interesting and were driving late in the fourth quarter but Hawk Jordan Townes intercepted West Mesquite quarterback Shateek Nasir, stopping the drive and sealing the win for Hendrickson.

The Hawks move on to face Tyler’s John Tyler in the second round.

Unfortunately for the Cougars this time they could not extricate themselves from that ditch, falling 49-28 and ending their season.

That is not to say Connally (8-3) did not attempt to stage one of their patented comebacks. Cougar quarterback Dajon Williams led the Cougars storming back, firing a 63-yard touchdown pass to Breion Evans to close the first half and then hooking up twice with Jerryl Yarbrough in the third quarter to cut the Indian lead to 28-21. Williams finished the game with 291 yards and three scores and ran for one more Connally touchdown. Yarbgrough grabbed seven of his passes for 204 yards.

However, the Cougar defense had no answer for Waxahachie running back Robert Lowe, who gashed Connally for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Lowe’s fourth score of the game, on a one-yard run early in the fourth quarter was the icing on the cake for the Indians.

High school football’s second season kicks off tonight and for the first time ever all three PISD teams are entrants in the championship tournament at the same time. Every game has an interesting storyline as Hendrickson looks for payback against the team that eliminated them last year, Pflugerville faces a squad that would have to win the state title to finish the year with a .500 record and Connally squares off against a tough opponent in one of the best first-round matchups on the schedule. With kickoff just hours away, here’s a look at the games.

Connally (8-2) vs. Waxahachie (8-2)

Where: Waco ISD Stadium

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m., Thursday

Outlook: The Cougars roll into the game fresh off a stunning come-from-behind victory over Manor to close out the regular season. Connally rallied to get past the Mustangs in the game’s final minutes and hope the momentum they built in that contest carries over to this week’s matchup. The Indians finished the year tied for first place in District 15-4A but lost their final game of the year, falling to Mesquite Poteet 46-41 last Friday. Waxahachie is led by quarterback Don King III. The senior signal caller has passed for 2257 yards and 18 touchdowns on the year. His top targets have been Terrance Hawkins (35 catches/691 yards/8 touchdowns) and Quinn Sargent (23 catches /551 yards/6 touchdowns). When the Indians run the ball they rely on Robert Lowe Jr. who has rushed for 1357 yards and scored 26 touchdowns on the year. With so much talent on offense, it is not surprising to see Waxahachie averages 41 points per game. Their defense is also stingy, allowing just 24 points per game. However, the latter statistic might be a bit misleading as the Indians’ defense has given up over 30 points four times.

Pflugerville (4-6) at Del Valle (2-8)

Where: Veterans Stadium

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m., Friday

Outlook: The Cardinals are one of two playoff aberrations coming out of District 15-5A. The team was 0-8 before winning their final two games of the year and earning a playoff sport in the process. They share four common opponents with the Panthers, having lost to Georgetown (35-21), Bowie (28-14) and Westlake (55-7) before beating Akins (49-13) in their final game of the year. For comparison’s sake the Panthers defeated Georgetown (20-14) and Akins (42-7) but lost to Westlake (45-14) and Bowie (14-7). The Cardinals are led by dual-threat quarterback Jaylen Alfaro. The senior has passed for 940 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 691 yards and eight scores. Xxavier Holman leads the running attack with 849 yards and six touchdowns. Chris Campbell leads the receiving corps with 30 catches for 409 yards and three touchdowns. Del Valle’s offense is averaging just 22 points per game, however they have scored 97 points in their last two games so they might be peaking at the right time. Defensively the Cardinals allow over 30 points per game and are susceptible to the run, giving up an average of 268 yards per game.

Hendrickson (8-2) vs. West Mesquite (5-5)

Where: Waco Midway Panther Stadium

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m., Friday

Outlook: The Hawks enjoyed an off week last week while the Wranglers had to beat Forney just to get into the playoffs. The game is a chance for payback for Hendrickson which lost 48-39 to West Mesquite in the first round of the playoffs last year. However, the Wranglers will not have the services of quarterback Trevone Boykin this year as he has graduated. Taking his place under center has been Shateek Nasir who has thrown for 1010 yards and 10 scores on the season. Courtland Smith leads West Mesquite in rushing with 507 yards and two scores while Eldridge Massington tops the receiving corps with 39 catches for 663 yards and six touchdowns. The Wranglers offense has struggled this year, averaging just 21 points per game but their defense has been a bright spot, limiting opponents to 23 points per game. However, the Hawks dynamic running backs should be able to run the ball as West Mesquite is allowing 184 rushing yards per game.

MANOR — In a game with district title implications, the Connally Cougars stopped Manor from grabbing a share of the 16-4A championship with a thrilling come-from-behind 41-40 victory on Friday.

“I am so proud of this team as we played hard and kept fighting to the end,” Connally coach Howard McMahan said.

The Cougars improve to 8-2 and finish district with a 4-2 mark with the victory. They move into the playoffs where they will take on Waxahachie at 7:30 p.m. at Waco ISD Stadium tonight.

A Manor fumble on the first series of the game set the Connally offense up at the Mustang 25-yard line and the Cougars wasted no time in scoring. After successive positive running by Dae Payton, the Cougars were on the board with his dive up the middle and across the goal line. This was the first of his three touchdowns as he racked up 112 yards on 20 carries. Daniel Portillo added the extra point to give the visitors the 7-0 lead.

Manor was hungry to answer and drove the length of the field with quarterback Jacorey McQueen leading the charge. McQueen hooked up with Tyrone Evans for a 45-yard catch and run to set up a one-yard Evans plunge for the score. Connally stopped the Mustangs on a two-point conversion try and led 7-6.

Manors blocked a Connally field goal attempt and caught it at their own five-yard line, where they would begin with the worst field position of the night. McQueen led a clock eating drive that resulted in a two-yard touchdown run. The Mustangs again tried for a two point conversion and came up empty again and led 12-7 with 6:07 in the half.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the final six minutes and Manor led 18-14 at halftime. The Mustangs lead grew to 33-14 with 21 seconds left in the third quarter, but the Cougars rallied. Dajon Williams scored on a one-yard run, but his score was answered by a 23-yard touchdown run by McQueen to put Manor up 40-20 with 5:40 to play.

The Cougars wasted little time in answering. Jim Roberts took the ball in for a three-yard touchdown, and Randall Paige scored the two-point conversion making it 40-28. With 3:51 left on the clock the Cougars lined up and kicked an onside kick, which they successfully recovered. The Cougars good fortune would be temporarily put on hold as Williams was intercepted. The Cougar defense stiffened and forced a punt. With 2:39 on the clock the Cougars marched for the end zone, scoring on a six-yard run by Jerryl Yarbrough. The extra point attempt was blocked making it 40-34 in favor of the home side.

Connally attempted another onside kick but was called offsides. On their second try, the Cougars recovered the ball. With 1:33 remaining, the Cougars score in four plays. The drive was highlighted by the 30-yard catch and run by Yarbrough and then capped with the eight-yard run by Payton. Portillo put the extra point on the score board to cement the win.

“We practice special teams every day and it’s always good to finish with a win,” McMahan added. “We look forward to the playoffs!”

Based on the way they played Friday night, one would have never known the Pflugerville Panthers were playoff bound and Stony Point was the team putting the wraps on a disappointing year. The Tigers dominated every phase of their game with the Panthers, beating them 35-7 at Kuempel Stadium.

While Stony Point didn’t get a huge offensive game out of any player, Markell Autry did have a nice night, rushing for 86 yards and scoring twice. However, it was the Tiger defense that led them past the Panthers. Stony Point’s first points of the game came when James Hart made a nice play on a pass attempt by Pflugerville’s Blain Kruemcke. Hart, who was in the backfield when Kruemcke tried to throw, tipped the ball in the air and then pulled it away from the Panther signal caller before racing 40 yards for the game’s first score.

The Tiger defense set up the team’s second score as well, sacking Kruemcke on a third down and getting their team the ball back around midfield. On the second play of the drive, Aidan Barrera launched a long pass to Braizon Fresch who hauled it in for a 38-yard score. Stony Point’s defense set up the third score as well, intercepting Kruemcke one more time and giving the Tiger offense the ball at the Panther 39-yard line. Stony Point’s offense methodically moved the ball those 39 yards on seven plays, eventually scoring on a one yard Autry run.

The Tiger defense struck one more time on the first Pflugerville possession of the third quarter. Kruemcke was sacked and fumbled and Stony Point’s Scottie Tatum recovered the ball at the Panther 21-yard line. It took the Tiger offense just three plays to travel that distance, scoring on a 3-yard run by Autry. Stony Point got one more touchdown in the game on an 11-yard run by Tyler White.

The Panthers, who did not go over 100 yards rushing as a team until the fourth quarter, finally got on the board with 6:52 left in the game when Adrian Dilworth toted the ball across the goal line from a yard out.
