While her classmates are enjoying their summer break at home, Hendrickson High sophomore track athlete Shavona Tavarez will be competing down under.

Tavarez was recently informed that she had qualifed to take part in a track meet sponsored by Down Under Sports this summer where she will test her skill against athletes from all over the world.

“I’m excited,” Tavarez said. “It was shocking. People from all over the world will be there, so it’s pretty crazy.”

Tavarez said that scouts from the Down Under Sports organization saw her compete and invited her to apply.

“They saw me run in school,” she explained. “They sent a letter to my coach and asked if I wanted to do it.”

The chance to represent her state and country and compete against other top athletes her age is a big deal for Tavarez. Even though she is only a sophomore she is already establishing herself as one of the top competitors on the Hawks’ team and she hopes the experience this summer will make her even better.

“I hope to gain more confidence and meet new people,” she said. “I want to have fun and give it my all and see how good the other athletes from around the world are.”

Tavarez says she began competing in track when she was 8-years old. In a way she seems destined to be in the position she now finds herself in. Her mother is a coach of the Austin Striders Track Club which was founded by her grandfathers Harvey and Howard Ware. She competes in the 200-meters, triple jump and relays for Hendrickson. She says she will also compete in these events in Australia and hopes the top-notch competition will bring out the best in her.

“I want to run my personal best in the 200 and jump at least 37 feet in the triple jump.”
